‘Unter den Linden‘ the linden trees dwindle -The sealed city

Trees gave Berlin’s traditional, grand boulevard its name: Unter den Linden. For the construction of Underground line 5, 54 of the 304 avenue trees were felled. Even five years after the above-ground construction work was completed, no lime trees had been replanted by spring 2024. The planting holes were paved with asphalt and thus the ground was sealed. Not a good signal to the population. Unter den Linden is a prime example of the disappearance of street trees in Berlin. The city is apparently overburdened when it comes to planting new street trees. Additionally, large areas sealed by development massively increase the heating of the city in summer and cause stress for the population. Has Berlin capitulated to the climate crisis?
